Legacy Operating System Support Ending for Chrome

The limit for Google Chrome support on legacy operating systems has come! This month (April 2016), Google Chrome will no longer be receiving support or updates for the following operating systems:

  • Windows XP
  • Windows Vista
  • Mac OS X 10.6
  • Mac OS X 10.7
  • Mac OS X 10.8

If you are using an operating system from the above list, you have most likely received your last update, or will very soon, and your browser will no longer be updated.

We have seen an increase of Chrome users in our membership. In 2015, 38.9% of our members accessed Paragon through Google Chrome. Then from January 1, 2016 to March 29, 2016 this percentage rose to 50.4%. We know this trend is due to Microsoft’s end of support for XP, and now Chrome will no longer support XP as well.

If your computer is running one of the operating systems affected by this change, these are the options:

  1. Upgrade to a new operating system/purchase a new computer
    • It may be well worth your while to upgrade by purchasing a new computer which will have the latest operating system installed.
  2. Switch browsers
    • If you try a browser switch, the versions of Internet Explorer and Safari bundled in the older operating system versions usually aren’t compatible with newer websites. There are other browsers that can be downloaded but you will likely have the same problems – no support for the older OS versions.
  3. Continue using the outdated browser after support ends – possibly a risky option
    • Using software that is no longer receiving patches will greatly increase the probability that your system will become infected with viruses or malware.
      • You may not have the ability to visit needed sites.
      • Example: Older browsers that don’t support TLS 1.2 cannot access Paragon after it was updated to increase security. [Websites use TLS (Transport Layer Security) to secure communications between their servers and web browsers]
