Sometimes it’s easier to show someone a picture of what you’re looking at than it is to describe that picture in words. Luckily, both Windows and Mac include built in functionality to take a picture of your computer screen.This picture of what’s displayed on your monitor is known as a screenshot. Screenshots can be very useful in communicating computer problems to IT support staff, or to document the contents of a website or application.
To take a screenshot on a Windows computer:
1. Arrange the windows on your monitors as desired for the picture.
2. Press the Print Screen on your keyboard. It’s often abbreviated as “Print Scrn” or “PRT SCN”
3. The screenshot has been copied to the clipboard.
4. Open your email client and start a new message.
5. Click your mouse inside the message body to place your cursor there.
6. Press Control + V to paste the image into an email.
7. You can also paste the image into a Word Document or MS Paint file.
To take a screenshot on a Mac computer:
1. Arrange the windows on your Mac’s monitor as desired for the picture.
2. Press and hold Command, Control, and Shift.
3. While holding the above keys, press the 3 key once and let go of all keys.
4. The image has been copied to your Mac’s clipboard.
5. Open your email client and start a new message.
6. Click your mouse inside the message body to place your cursor there.
7. Press Command and V to paste your screenshot into the message body.
Again, screenshots can be immensely helpful while troubleshooting a computer issue. They’re a great way to document system bugs and help quickly communicate complicated problems. They can also be handy if you want to make a note of a problem when you don’t have time to call in to discuss the issue with our support staff.
